To understand the transition of soft-pack battery tabs to nickel, one must first recognize the classification and characteristics of the tabs!
The tab is a component of soft pack lithium-ion battery products. The battery is divided into positive and negative electrodes, and the tab is the metal conductor that connects the positive and negative electrodes from the cell. In simple terms, the ears of the battery's positive and negative electrodes are the contact points during charging and discharging. The positive electrode of the battery uses aluminum (Al) material, while the negative electrode uses nickel (Ni) material. The negative electrode can also use copper-plated nickel (Ni—Cu) material, which is composed of a film and a metal strip.

1. Classification by tab metal strip material:
1. Aluminum (Al) tab: Generally used as the positive tab, and if the battery has a lithium titanate negative electrode, it is also used as the negative tab.
2. Nickel (Ni) tab: Used as the negative tab, mainly applied in small digital batteries, such as: mobile batteries, power bank batteries, tablet batteries, smart transmission device batteries, etc.
3. Copper-plated nickel (Ni—Cu) tab: Used as the negative tab, mainly applied in power batteries and high-rate batteries.
2. Classification by tab adhesive (domestic market):
1. Black adhesive tab: Generally used in mid-to-low-end digital small batteries.
2. Yellow adhesive tab: Generally used in mid-to-low-end power batteries and high-rate batteries.
3. White adhesive tab: Generally used in high-end digital batteries, power batteries, and high-rate batteries.
3. Classification of finished tab packaging:
1. Disc tab (the entire metal strip is wrapped into a disc after being added with adhesive film through equipment), used in automated production lines.
2. Sheet tab (the metal strip is cut into individual pieces after being added with adhesive film, then arranged in rows and clamped between two thin transparent plastic sheets), used in ordinary production lines.
Tab to nickel laser welding automation:
The tab to nickel process involves transferring nickel to the positive aluminum tab for easy connection with other materials. Therefore, in the nickel transfer process, laser welding is relatively simple compared to other cell structure welding, and the power requirement for the laser is not high. Generally, a power of 500-1000W can achieve continuous welding, and it is easier to automate, with basically no difficulties. For some high-requirement enterprises, the tab to nickel process also requires tensile testing to meet certain quality standards. The automated welding process: Its automated structure is simple, and the process generally involves feeding the soft pack battery material first, then rotating to another station for shaping, flattening the tab, and then rotating to another station for welding. At this time, the nickel strip automatic feeder achieves automatic cutting and presses tightly with the soft pack battery tab through a universal pressing head, achieving laser output welding. After welding, the tensile strength of the tab can also undergo further automatic testing and grading!
