On the afternoon of July 29, CATL announced that the first generation of sodium-ion batteries has officially been launched, making it the first truly commercialized sodium-ion battery in the world. It charges faster, has lower manufacturing costs, and can reach 80% charge saturation in just 15 minutes, with a single cell energy density of 160 kilowatt-hours. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries do not have advantages in energy density and stability, but with the combination of other auxiliary materials, they can also achieve practical application development. However, currently, the supporting peripheral components are still relatively few, especially the new material positive and negative electrode tabs, and a complete sodium-ion battery industrial chain has not yet formed. After all, this is a new generation of new material batteries. Nevertheless, its production process is quite similar to that of lithium-ion batteries, and some equipment can even be used interchangeably. This allows many lithium-ion battery Manufacturers to easily transition to producing sodium-ion batteries. Although sodium-ion batteries currently do not have the advantages of lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density and stability, and face global technical challenges, the advantages of sodium batteries are also very obvious. Compared to the scarce and expensive lithium element, sodium is found everywhere in nature. Under the global energy transformation, sodium-ion batteries have great potential. At the same time, sodium-ion batteries have excellent low-temperature performance, providing a broader range of applications.
