What are the process characteristics of the 18650 cylindrical battery PACK?

The 18650 lithium battery is one of the common lithium-ion batteries on the current market and is one of the important battery cells that make up the lithium battery PACK. The process of its PACK is determined by its structural specifications and properties. Clearly, the biggest feature of the 18650 battery PACK is its multi-series and multi-parallel configuration, which is flexible and simple in structure. In mass production, semi-automatic/full-automatic welding assembly has been achieved. However, to achieve good assembly production, we also need to understand the structural characteristics of the 18650 lithium battery PACK, which includes: 18650 battery cells, battery protection boards, connecting nickel sheets, lead nickel sheets, auxiliary materials such as green paper, insulating paper, wires or plug wires, PVC packaging or shells, outputs (including connectors), key switches, power indicators, and auxiliary materials such as EVA, green barley paper, and plastic brackets, which together constitute the PACK. Most types of 18650 battery PACKs apply this set of processes.

Laser welding is an important workstation on the 18650 battery PACK assembly line, including nickel sheet welding, soft connection welding, protection board welding, etc. It replaces traditional resistance welding, avoiding long-standing disadvantages such as false welding between battery cells, welding through, or increased battery resistance at welding points. It is evident that laser welding is crucial to the manufacturing process of the 18650 battery PACK.

1. Multi-parallel and multi-series 18650 lithium battery pack design process techniques
1. Adopt the principle of ease of operation, meaning it should be easy for employees to operate.
2. Adopt the principle of operational safety, meaning that employees should not easily short-circuit or have good preventive measures while operating.
3. Adopt the equipment principle, meaning that auxiliary equipment should be used as much as possible to complete tasks instead of manual labor, at least semi-automated.
4. The packaging design should be reasonable, easy to take and place, and products should not be difficult to retrieve once they reach the customer.

2. Quality characteristics of the 18650 lithium battery pack process
1. Use lithium batteries that meet quality standards, requiring qualified and stable suppliers to provide well-performing individual batteries. Individual batteries must undergo a series of safety and performance tests and can only be used after passing.
2. Require low internal resistance and good consistency of the batteries. Whether for a 14.8V lithium battery pack or other energy storage battery packs, low internal resistance must be ensured to guarantee large current discharge capacity, platform, and heat dissipation.
3. The battery structure should adopt a ventilation design, maintaining a distance of no less than 2mm between adjacent batteries. This structure requires the use of plastic brackets to secure the batteries.
4. The PACK battery factory uses slotted nickel sheets for spot welding, with nickel sheet sizes meeting the requirements for large current discharge. The nickel sheet material ensures low internal resistance, the spot welding machine guarantees stable operation, the welding pins ensure quality, and operators must be trained and qualified before operating. After spot welding, the weld points must be checked for firmness. Additionally, each batch of products undergoes vibration testing to verify anti-vibration performance.
5. Different batches of batteries are made into typical finished products and undergo life tests. When summarizing the design specifications for lithium battery PACKs, actual cycle life is obtained through cycle testing of the finished battery products.
6. Verify the high and low-temperature performance of the batteries. Different PACK lithium battery manufacturers make finished products from battery cells and conduct discharge tests at different rates under high and low temperatures to obtain actual discharge curves.
