Currently, laser welding, cutting, and marking are widely used in industrial production applications. Many new terms can sometimes be difficult to understand, and it can be hard to grasp what they actually mean. For example, today we talk about the single-mode and multi-mode of lasers. What are the differences between them, and what are their respective advantages or characteristics?
In fact, single-mode and multi-mode can be likened to the image of one person versus a group of people. In lasers, it represents the relationship between a pump source and multiple pump sources. The laser states they emit are also different. Single-mode lasers exhibit a Gaussian distribution, with energy concentrated at the center, resulting in better beam quality. In contrast, multi-mode lasers, which output laser light from multiple pump sources through a combining component, present a beam shape resembling an inverted paper cup, with energy distribution. However, the beam quality is not as high as that of single-mode. Does this mean that multi-mode is inferior to single-mode? Not necessarily; let's continue to analyze.
Different Applications:
Single-mode and multi-mode lasers have different applications. We know that single-mode energy is more concentrated, akin to the saying "concentrate forces to accomplish great tasks." In welding or cutting stainless steel, carbon steel, and other materials at 1MM or below, single-mode processing efficiency is faster, and production efficiency is higher. In terms of quality, they are actually quite similar; it's just that the cutting speed of multi-mode lags slightly behind.
Returning to our welding, in thermal conduction welding, the weld seams produced by single-mode lasers are smoother and more stable. Therefore, they are generally used in welding thin metal materials, such as the ear tabs of software batteries.
For thick metals that require high power welding, multi-mode lasers are needed, as they have a better depth-to-width ratio for weld seams, such as in square power battery packs.
In deep fusion welding, multi-mode lasers can achieve a better depth-to-width ratio for weld seams, for example, in the busbar welding of square power battery packs.

Summary
The single-mode and multi-mode of lasers are merely characteristics of the lasers and do not represent a distinction of good or bad. Their application fields are different. Generally, for thin plates and medium to low power, single-mode lasers can be used, while for high power and thick metal plates, multi-mode lasers can be employed. Conversely, using single-mode lasers on thick metal plates would be inadequate, and the quality of cutting and welding processes would certainly be poor. If multi-mode is applied to thin plates, it would only result in burning through the thin plates. Therefore, we need to choose the mode of the laser according to the welding requirements.
