At 12:01 AM Eastern Time on July 6, the United States officially began imposing a 25% tariff on $34 billion worth of Chinese products, marking the largest trade war in economic history to date. Gao Feng, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, stated at a press conference on July 5 that China will not bow to threats and coercion, nor will it waver in its determination to defend global free trade and the multilateral system.
Yesterday, many people in the country were surprisingly focused on the news of "a ship full of American soybeans racing to Dalian". Unfortunately, this ship did not arrive before the trade war, which means the owner may have to pay more than 40 million yuan in tariffs.
Returning to the laser industry and equipment manufacturing sector, the United States is intent on obstructing China's Made in 2025 development plan, with advanced laser products and CNC machine tools also included in the list of products subject to tariffs. The first round of tariff lists, effective at 12 PM Beijing time on July 6, covers 818 products, imposing a 25% tariff, totaling $34 billion. The adjusted list shows that the U.S. government aims to implement a "precision strike" strategy against China's high-tech industries under the Made in 2025 initiative, focusing particularly on China's electromechanical products.

The tariffs imposed by the U.S. cover a wide range, with some industries having products subject to tariffs accounting for as much as 100% of the total imports in that industry. These industries are primarily high-tech sectors, such as railway transportation equipment and parts (100%); aerospace vehicles and parts (98.3%); optical, laser, and precision instruments (52.6%); and machinery, mechanical equipment, and parts (37.1%). Among the newly added industries, the impact on mineral fuels is particularly severe, reaching 77.0%.
In this round of tariffs, optical, laser, medical, and other precision instruments account for 1.23% of all products imported from China to the United States.
High-end CNC machine tools, including lasers, have been included in China's "Intelligent Manufacturing Development Plan (2016-2020)" as key development projects. Laser processing equipment and other high-end CNC machine tools are of great significance for advanced industrial manufacturing, and the U.S. is well aware of this, thus hoping to restrict the development of our technology and manufacturing capabilities in this area. Based on this, laser technology and other CNC machine tool products have been included in the U.S. tariff list.
